I am looking for James Sarson married to Mary Sarson. James born approx 1842, they left Ireland with John and Bridget Sarson  and appear in the 1871 English Census in Cheshire. James and Mary would have been my great grandparents, any information would be appreciated.
I posted this in Portarlington (Laois) and somebody asked me what religious denomination they belonged to obviously I cannot be sure but I guessed they might be Catholic, never heard another word from the gentleman called Paddy, who said he needed that information to search.

From what I can see, the spelling of the surname in Ireland was Searson.

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie and did not see baptismal records for John and Bridget or the marriage record for James and Mary except for one lead described below.   Portarlington RC records go back to 1821 so if the Searsons were from that parish, records should be available.

The only possible lead was an 1853 marriage in Dublin between a James Searson and a Mary Sheal. They were married at the St. Bridget's Church of Ireland parish in Dublin city. See second record

Let me know if you have additional information.

  • Thank you for your help, all I know is that James Sarson put Portarlington as his place of birth. I have found it very difficult to find any information from Irish records, as you say the name was probably Searson is it possible the family were from another area of Tipperary originally?
