I'm looking for information about Thomas Mahoney who married Mary McCann living in Cross. All of their kids moved to the US except 1. I have some cousins there and also I think a house is still standing that was theirs. I've been wondering where it is but can't find addresses. Someone told me it was across the street from a church and thought the church was called something like the Little Ark but on a google map search I see what looks like some industrial building and then a house. Kids of theirs were named - Nora, Mary, Bridget, Bernadette, and Patrick - all born in the 1920s/1930s.

    It appears that Thomas Mahoney was living in the townland of Moveen.

    Correction

    The townland is "Moneen" not Moveen which is nearer to Kilkee.

    Griffith's Valuation record is attached which was recorded in the early 1850's

    I have searched for children of Thomas Mahoney and Mary McCann - 1920 - 1935. No result.

    There are children recorded for a Thomas Mahony and Maria Kingsley in Cross -

  • Wow thank you! On my father's birth cert is read Mary McCann... hmm. I think one cousin of mine might be mistaken in thinking the house is across from the church as my brother says it isn't. He visited it back in early 2000s. But there are no street names. I am trying to find online public records that may be in Ennis but so far no search results have gotten me there.

    Can you send me details on Thomas' birth record and I will check if there is a baptism record available.

    You will see from the 1901 and 1911 Irish census - www.nationalarchives.ie/census - that there were very few people named

    McCann in County Clare.

  • I don't have that, unfortunately. Family records were not something that my father kept... or even had I think. But if there's a later census - the children were all born in the 1920s/1930s.

    I checked with the Clare Civil Registration office today, in person. No record of children being born to a Thomas Mahoney/Mahony in County

    Clare - 1920 to 1940 with the mothers name - Mary McCann.

    The name "Maria Kingsley" did show up, with the father - Thomas Mahoney.

    Further to previous Posts, there is a Surname "McGANN" in County Clare which could be confused with McCANN.

    The surname is recorded in the area of North County Clare. Not shown in West Clare. According to Surnames of Ireland by Dr. Edward MacLysaght it 

    is a Connacht form of "McCann"

    I have searched for the marriage of Thomas Mahoney to a Mary McCann/McGann which was negative.

    The same situation with Maria Kingsley.

    In regard to the surname "Kingsley" this appears in the 1911 census for Cross, but is not in the 1901 census.

    Kingsley is mainly a Protestant name (Church of Ireland).
