I have ancestral ties to Kilbeacon through my Ryan family, which connects by marriage to a Tobin family whose roots seem to lie in Kilmacow parish. I think this Tobin family also had family members in Kilbeacon parish

My ancestor Valentine Ryan was born 3 October 1811 in Templeorum parish, son of John Ryan and Margaret Oates.

On 21 September 1836 in Kilmacow parish, Valentine Ryan married Bridget Tobin.

Because Kilmacow records do not go far enough back in time for me to find Bridget Tobin's parents, I have not found their names — only that she was born in 1818, the date given on her tombstone.

I think, however, that Bridget Tobin may have had three siblings, all of whom lived in Kilbeacon parish after marrying:

Daniel Tobin, who married Mary Walsh in Kilmacow parish, 12 February 1832, with William Murphy and ? Lyons as witnesses

Catherine Tobin, who married John Walsh in Kilmacow parish, 20 January 1833, with Edmond Hayden and Margaret Fitzgerald as witnesses. The same two people witnessed the marriage of Valentine Ryan and Bridget Tobin.

Edmond Tobin, who married Mary Comerford in Templeorum parish, 23 July 1839, with Michael Hyland and Mary Holden as witnesses. This family lived at Buckstown, as did Valentine Ryan and Bridget Tobin.

If anyone has information about these Tobins or other Tobins living in Kilmacow and Kilbeacon parishes in the first half of the 1800s, I'd be very grateful to hear about that information.

  • I have Ryan and Tobin ancestors from Tipperary but they emigrated to New Jersey in their 20’s.  My gggrandmother Catherine Ryan was born in Ballylooby in 1849.  She married John Tobin who was born in Ardfinnan, also in 1849.  Wish I had more, as I’m traveling to Ireland in two weeks.  Good luck in your search.

  • Have you found a U.S. death record or obituary for Bridget Tobin Ryan? It may give her parents' names.

    I hope this is helpful.

  • Catherine, it's interesting that you also have Ryan and Tobin ancestors. I suspect my Tobin roots in Kilkenny may definitely lie in Tipperary back time. I'm not sure about my Ryans, though Ryan is certainly a very common name in Tipperary and where my Ryans lived in Kilkenny is not far from Tipperary. Hope your trip to Ireland goes well!

Patricia, thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I've looked for death records or obituaries of Bridget Tobin Ryan, but have found none other than her tombstone record.

  • I am looking for the history of Ann Tobin who married a Thomas Heffernan probably around 1837. Where they married, I cannot be sure but at some time they lived in Muckalee, Kilkenny. The number of children born to Thomas and Ann is unknow but at least three of their daughter, Mary, Jane and Ellen immigrated to Sydney, Australia between 1857 and 1862. All three daughters could read and write and were in contact with each other and probably their parents to facilitate their respective travel to Australia. Mary first, follow by Jane and then Ellen. This must have been heart breaking for Thomas and Ann.

It is possible that Bridget and Ann were sisters, married around the same time and have a common family history. It would be interesting to know.

Mary Heffernan, Ann Tobin’s daughter was my GG grandmother and married James O’Donnell in 1862, in Sydeny. Jane and Ellen went on to marry and have their own families.

I attempted to visit Muckalee in 2018 but got lost. I did, however, get as far as the Muckalee Piggery and had to turn around.

Any information about the Tobin or Heffernan families would be appreciated.

  • If you can identify a sibling of Bridget Tobin Ryan and look at his or her records, you might find the parents' names. I hope this helps.

  • Peter, thanks for your message. I can't say that I recognize Ann Tobin Heffernan, unfortunately. If she and her husband Thomas Heffernan lived at some point in Muckalee, I'd tend to think they may be from different Tobin families, since Muckalle and Mullinavat/Kilmacow are at opposite ends of County Kilkenny. I'll see if I can spot information about Ann.

  • Patricia, thank you for your suggestion. Yes, my hope has been to put together a family group for Bridget. I have no proof that Daniel, Catherine, and Edmond are siblings of hers, but there are some good clues pointing in that direction. So far, in anything I can find about that set of Tobins, I don't locate information about their parents. If these Tobins were born in Kilmacow parish, as I suspect they were, the problem is that the Kilmacow records don't go far enough back in time to yield information about their parents.

  • Hello, I too have ancestors from Kilmacow and found several connections in the surrounding parishes. I have been reading through all of the Kilkenny parish BMD records and discovered that St. Mary's (Kilkenny City) 3rd set of images (1801-1842) is full of marriages from Kilmacow and Scart parishes (pre-dates the Kilmacow parish records). You may find some connections there. Also, my Kilmacow residents were mostly baptized in Carrigeen and Mooncoin.
