Hi, I am trying to connect Felix Murphy to his family in Ireland. I messaged about a year ago, but may have a little more helpful info? Felix enlisted in the British army on Oct 9, 1833 in Newry Ireland. His card said he was born 1815 Mullaughbrack County Armagh. Through DNA it looks like he has a half-brother named John Murphy born about 1819, tombstone reads, County Down. Their father could be Michael J Murphy or James Murphy born about 1790 in Ireland. John's Mother could be Winnifred Fallen or Fallon born about 1800 Ireland. 1841 census in Liverpool England has a James Murphy 50, Winnifred 40, children, James,15, William, 18, Edward, 12, all born in Ireland. They would have been Catholic. Felix Murphy left Ireland with the 15th of foot for Canada and was in USA by 1836. John left Ireland somtime in the 1850's and married in the USA. One last Bit there is a Martin Murphy connected, I have not found any dna cousins to him, but his death record list Michael Murphy and Winnifred Fallen as parents. He was born 1827 in Ireland and died in USA in1911.

This may be a bit much, but I thought I would give it a try.

Thank you.

Mark Murphy

  • Mullaghbrack is in Co Armagh. 2 RC parishes include it – Ballymore and Ballymacnab. Both appear to only have baptism records from the 1840s. If the family were in Liverpool by 1841 you may struggle to find any record of them in Ireland.

Over 1700 Murphys in Armagh in the 1901 census, so a very common name in that area, as you probably already knew.

  • Mark, Keep in mind that the names Felix, Phelim, and Philip are interchangeable.  So, the same person may be found recorded under any of these names.  (I have an ancestor called Felix and have encountered this situation.)

If you haven't looked at the vital and church records for all of Felix's children in the U.S., may I recommend you do so.  These records often include information about the parents and sometimes have place of origin.

Also, do you have Felix's U.S. marriage and death records? You may find helpful information in those.

    Good luck.

  • Thank you Elwyn, and Patricia. I have seen Felix's name as Phillip and Phelix on the census I just thought they were a mistake by whoever was doing the census.
