John Byrnes aged 11 sailed from Queenstown and arrived in Ellis Island on board the Teutonic on 9th October 1902.

He was intending on staying with his sister, Mrs. Clune at 394 Bergen Street, in Brooklyn, New York.  John Byrnes was the son of Dennis Byrnes, a widower from Ballyblood, Tulla.  He was one of eight children born to Dennis.  He carried $2 with him and his father had paid for his ticket.  He was listed as a scholar as his occupation.  

John Byrnes registered for the WWI Draft on 5th June 1917. At that time, he listed his age as 29, and he was single, living in West Hoboken, New Jersey.  He listed his place of birth as Tulla and also listed his date of birth as 14th May 1888.  He had taken his first papers out for naturalisation in April 1915 and he was a manager for a chain of grocery stores, Cussens in Hoboken. John Joseph Byrnes was described as being 5 feet 3 inches tall, medium – slight build, grey eyes and brown hair.  

John Joseph Byrnes also registered for the WWII Draft.  He was aged 53 and listed his date of birth as 14 May 1889.  He was married and his next-of-kin was his wife, Mary. They lived at 147 Carley Avenue in Huntington, NY (Long Island) and John was employed with the A&P Tea Company.  

John had married Mary in 1927 and they had one son, John Byrnes Junior born in 1933.  

John and his wife, Mary were listed in the 1940 U.S. Census where John was working for the A&P Tea Company, and they were living in New York with their son, John Byrnes Junior.
