Clare Agnes Hynes 1894

Back to List

Clare Hynes was one of 7 children born to James Hynes and Mary Halloran Hynes in Salford, Manchester, England in 1894.  Clare's father was a shopkeeper from Tulla who had emigrated to Manchester in the 1870s.  Clare was living with her aunt, Mary Hynes, a dressmaker in Tulla and assisting her as a shop assistant in the 1911 Census.  Sometime after, Clare moved back to England.

In September, 1918, she and her father James travelled to Ireland to visit family.  Their last stop was in Tulla.  It has been said that the night that Clare was packing her bags at her cousins' house, she remarked jokingly that "she was packing her bags for the fishes".  On October 10, 1918, she and her father travelled onboard the RMS Leinster.  They were both killed and their bodies were never recovered.  Their names are noted on the Clare Peace Wall at the Clare Peace Park in Ennis, County Clare.

A Centenary Commemoration of the RMS Leinster tragedy was held in Ennis on 7 October 2018 in memory of Clare and the 10 other Clare victims.

For further information, please see the Commemoration booklet:  The RMS Leinster Commemoration 1918-2018 Clare's Connection by Lucille Ellis.
