Legand has it that this is the " most haunted " Castle in Ireland. . .

E.M.H.

First stone construction . . . c.1400 . . . home to the Bannon's . . of Leap

Then taken over by the O'Carroll's Clan . . . who occupied it until the arrival of Cromwell's Army . . .

A marriage settlement between a daughter of the O'Carroll's and the DARBY family . . who then held it for the next three centuries. .

The Castle was burned down in 1921/22 . . . and the Lands (c. 4,500 acres ) were divided into small units for enterprising small farmers . .

The Darby Family were paid compensation . . by the newly formed Irish Free State Government . .

  • Hi , everyone. My Mother lived in Coolderry and this castle was not far from her home. She told me a lot of Irish history and only that people said the Castle was hauted no more then that on the castle. I was there in 2016 with a cousin and he pointed the castle out to me. We did not have time to stop but hoping next visit I will.
