As a youngster in the 80s, I had the good sense to write to my late paternal grandmother’s younger sister and asked her to share her knowledge of the family history.  They were Scots whose ancestors had emigrated from Ireland. I am now commencing my searches to learn more about these people.

Grand Aunt Betty wrote:

"Your ancestors came from Ireland.  My Father's folk lived in their farm lands 2 or 3 miles from the town of Manorhamilton, County Leitrim named 'Caraford' or 'Brack-na-more', where my Dad's youngest sister Anne & her husband lived till 1958.  Married name, Fox.  Aunt Anne died that year so he sold the land and went down to live with his son Pat Fox & wife Mary & six sons he died six months later."

According to the Scottish death registration for Grand Aunt Betty’s father her paternal grandparents with Felix Laughlin and Mary McGrath. Felix's mother's name may have been Ann Cullen.

Not much to go on. I’m think surname Laughlin is a bit of a tough one to search.

Aunt Betty again: “On my Mother's side her family came from "Kiltyclogher" that is further down south perhaps 40 mile from Sligo.”

I know quite a bit more about the maternal side of the family in Ireland.

Patrick Savage was born about 1860 in Sligo and died in Scotland in 1936. His parents were John Savage and Helen Oates who appear to have died sometime before 1903.

Patrick married Mary Duffy in Dunbarton County, Scotland in 1881. She was born in Ireland about 1861.  died at Glasgow 1928. Her parents were John Duffy and Mary Murphy who also appeared to have died before 1903.

I would be pleased to correspond with any fellow researchers/distant cousins out there.

  • There's 29 people named Fox in the townland of Brackary More, near Manorhamilton, in the 1911 census. Perhaps that's the townland your Fox ancestors came from?
