  • Hi June

I'm not sure what you are asking but I searched www.rootsireland.ie/ births/baptisms for children of John Fitzgerald & Mary Corbett and got 7 matches but no Cornelius.

    They are: Mary 1850 CONNOR 1853 John 1856 Joanna 1857 Abigail 1860 Julia 1862 Hannah 1865

(rootsireland requires credit to be purchased)

All of the records were from Mallow RC parish

The Irish censuses of 1901 & 1911 are free online

I searched the 1901 for Connor aged 47 + but got no results; however there were 2 for Cornelius - 1 aged 47 & the other 50 but both in Kerry

I assume the 47 would be correct so have pasted the family below

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Kerry/Ardea/Derryconnery/1412164/

    I couldn't find him in1911 however

  • Hi Col,

    thanks-you for your reply.

I engaged a geneoligt Paul Mccotter c2004 to find my family, he did send me some results from Mallow heritage centre but it took me months to comfirm they were my family due to Cornelius being baptised Connor and Abigail know in the family as Deboragh.

I am trying to go back further and find John Fitzgerald's parents Paul came up with a John Fitzgerald and Joanna Driscoll as the nearest match if John F was born c1828 in Balldyhene which I believe is just over the bridge in Mallow.  I have lots of sponser names at the children's baptism's but one that stands out is  a Walter (my late  fathers name) he was mentioned in Mallow voters but I can't seem to find a birth or any other information.  I know some of our family stayed in Mallow after Cornelius, Deboragh, Julian and Hannagh and parents John and Mary came to Gorton Manchester, we understan the local priest Justine Mccarthy may have arranged with priests in Gorton for the familt to have accomadation when they arrived here, I  have more information in my family files.

I also wonder about the statue in Mallow of a John Fitzgerald, could  his father John have been the son of my gtgt grandfather John Fitzgerald, I was told that all Fitzgerald's in Mallow would have been related?.    I am also intrested in the Corbett side, both John Fitzgerald and Patrick Corbett were Mallow town commissioners c 1840-1860.

I hope to visit Mallow again soon, the day I came over in 2004 the heritage centre was closed.

Any further information would be greatly appreciared.

    Thanks

  • Hi June

I hope our Mallow Cork expert picks up on your post.

There are 10 John Fitzgeralds born 1828 in Cork 1 is from Mallow RC on rootsireland

You may want to have a look on that site (which costs) and also try www.irishgenealogy.ie/ which is free and has a lot of Cork records

  • Hi Col,

thank-you so much for the links. I have been able to find a Thomas, William and Dennis Fitzgerald all in Balyldaheen, they must be related to John, also found Tenents and landlords John Fitzgerald and Patrick Corbett in Mallow and Lackanalooha, and the elusive Walter Fitzgerald.

I do hope your local historian picks up my messages as both sides of my family appear to have been prominent in Mallow c1850.

Cornelius came to Manchester c 1877 followed by his parents and sisters,  Cornelius was a farrier who trained at the forge in Fair lane, my cousin visited Mallow in 2005 and the forge was still there?.

I see a John Fitzgerald living at 22 Fair lane and another at 31 and  assume they are father and son, the senior being the town commissioner who had shops and houses in Mallow
