Hello - Are there any historical records of who may have worked in the local mines near Ballydehob from around 1825 to 1875?
I understand there were at least three - a mine owned by a Mr. Audley (closed 1840); a small copper mine in Coosheen east of Schull Bay operated by Captain Thomas (1839-1877) and another mine near Mt. Gabriel.
My 3rd great grandfather, Morgan Rahilly, worked as a miner in this area while raising his family (wife: Mary Margaret Coghlan (Coughlan) and we would like to know more about this industry. We will be visiting Ballydehob in May and wondered if there are any mining museums or other historical centers.
I attached the marriage registration for Morgan and Mary. Their church was Schull East.
Thank you,
