I am looking for ancestors of my Great Grandfather, Jeremiah O'Connell from Newmarket Co Cork.

He went to Australia and married a Clare girl, Catherine MacNamara from Parfleet, in St Marys Cathedral Sydney in 1860. Jeremiah's parents were John O'Connell and Catherine Mack. Jeremiah was born about 1828.

  • Hi John

I'm afraid there are quite a few Jeremiah O'Connell birth/baptism records from Cork so do you have a birth year to narrow them down? (There are 43 1845 + - 5 years) on www.rootsireland.ie/(pay site)

If you have the marriage record perhaps his age is on that?

I had a look on NSW BDM but the only marriage record for Jeremiah O'Connell was 1868 in Maitland to Helen Mary Long

www.irishgenealogy.ie/ is a free site which has a lot of Cork records also

  • Hi Col Jeremiah O'Connell was married in Sydney under the name of Jeremiah Connell, dropping the O' was not uncommon on Certificates, who was responsible I do not know. His age as stated on Marriage Register 179 on 24 November 1860 was 27, his occupation was Labourer and his parents were John Connell and Catherine Mack. He died on 17 May 1882, his age was stated as 53 years old, being in Colony of NSW about 25 years according to his son, who was to be my grandfather in the future. So he was born somewhere between 1829 and 1833 give or take a year. Thanks Col for your time.

  • Hi Col, I am sorry for the very late reply. I am not to sure how to navigate around this website, I just found your reply and Iapologise for not replying before but I just stumbled onto it and I do appreciate your efforts in trying to help me. The Catholic Cemetery Trust have lost my Great Grandfather Jeremiah his daughter. They were originally buried at what was called Petersham Cemetery but wer supposedly re-interred at Rookwood Cemetery but the cemetery are not sure where. A Christian Brothers school where I attended was built over the cemetery. One of Jeremiah's sons  Thomas my Maternal Grandfather, was buried at Liverpool Cemetery which is "administered" by Rookwood but the trust is no sure of his whereabouts. Thanks once again Col for your efforts.

  • Welcome back, John!

Sorry to hear of the Trust losing your ancestors; inefficient of them & traumatic for you. Is there any compensation for their error?

I'm just 'up the road' in Safety Beach (past Coffs) by the way.

Looks like the record I sent you was incorrect as the mother's surname was Nagle

Unfortunately it's the only record which comes up on www.rootsireland.ie/ for Jeremiah with parents John & Catherine in any count 1829 + - 10 years on www.rootsireland.ie/

I couldn't find the parents' marriage or any siblings' baptisms on rootsireland or www.irishgenealogy.ie/ I'm afraid.

    No luck on ancestry either.

The earliest Irish Census with Cork records is 1841 but no luck there either!

The Tithe Applotments (free online) have 157 John Connells in Cork 1826-34 but it's hard to know which is yours.

  • Hi Col, I don't know what Lady Bracknell ( The Importantce of being Earnest) would make of Rookwood cemetery. Info regarding Jeremiah O'Connell was taken from Marriage Certificate held at Mitchell Library Sydney. Jeremiah's parents are shown as John O'Connell and Catherine Mack. Iwould like to know where they are buried or anything else about them. My father Patrick Togher's parents and grandparents are also lost but in Oldcastle Parish, Co Meath, so much for the Church saying that the bodies of the dead are the Temples of the Holy Ghost, I suppose they are, if you can find them. Thank you for all you efforts, John Togher a parishioner of St John Bosco Parish Engadine.
