Hello,
I am looking for DNA tested people who descend from Murphys of Lehenagh vicinity and specifically the townland of Ballycurreen or vicinity, who would be willing to compare DNA data with me. I've been zeroing in on a critical moment in my family history and I think that DNA evidence may be the only way to verify my theory.
My g-grandfather was Michael Thomas Murphy born about 1863 in Cork and emigrated to the Boston, Massachusetts, area in the early 1880's. In his marriage and death records he lists his parents as Thomas Murphy and Johanna Keeffe. I have never found his birth/baptism, his parents' marriage or any birth/baptisms or other records for siblings. Based on DNA matching I think I have solved the question of Johanna Keeffe. It appears that she had an earlier marriage to a David Nunan/Noonan in 1844.
It seems that some time in the mid-1850's, Johanna Keeffe Nunan relocated to Lehenagh More with her young family. She may have been with her first husband David Nunan or he may already have passed. She had, at least, four children with David: Denis Nunan (b 1845), Mary Nunan Kenneally (1849-1929), William Nunan (1854-1887) and David Nunan (b 1855). Denis, Mary and David were all baptized in the Kinsale vicinity (records found). A Johanna Nunan is found at Lehenagh More in the Griffiths Valuation. In 1866 the eldest son Denis married Margaret Donovan at St Finbarr's. Both of their residences are listed as Frankfield. Margaret Donovan's father was listed as William Donovan. A William Donovan was listed adjacent to Johanna Nunan in Griffiths Valuation. In 1868, Johanna's daughter Mary married Daniel Kenneally. I have only found the parish record, not the civil record, so I cannot confirm their addresses but at least very soon after, based on births of children, they were living on Pouladuff Road, and further north in Togher/Ballyphehane. This seems logical because Daniel's father was Jeremiah Kenneally and there was a Jeremiah Kenneally in Griffiths Valuation living in that vicinity of Pouladuff Road. I have at least four DNA matches to descendants of Mary Nunan and Daniel Kenneally. In 1898 when her mother died on Pouladuff Road, Mary Nunan Kenneally registered the death as Johanna Murphy, aged 70. Mary is listed as "daughter." This is the sign to me that Johanna Keeffe Nunan Murphy is my gg-grandmother and explains a pattern of DNA matches among Keeffe descendants in Dunderrow north of Kinsale and the Kenneally descendants. My theory is that sometime between 1855 and 1865, or so, Johanna remarried to Thomas Murphy and they had a son, Michael Thomas Murphy, my g-grandfather. Looking back at Griffiths Valuation, I found that there was a Thomas Murphy living on a parcel in Ballycurreen that was about 1/2 mile from Johanna Nunan's parcel in Lehenagh More.
To summarize, I feel Johanna Keeffe Nunan, living in Lehenagh More in the late 1850's married Thomas Murphy from nearby Ballycurreen. A son Michael was born in the late 1850's or early 1860's. Perhaps when Thomas died, with no other children (?) with Johanna, she and her young son Michael moved in with her daughter Mary Nunan Kenneally on Pouladuff Road. She lived out her days there. Along the way, Michael left for the US.
In addition to never finding the marriage of Johanna Keeffe Nunan to Thomas Murphy, I have not been able to definitively identify a death for Thomas Murphy. The absence of these records is why I feel that perhaps only DNA matching to descendants of siblings of Thomas Murphy is my next line of research.
Regards,
Patrick Murphy
