Can anyone help me find out anything about a DELLA WEIR who appears in the 1901 Ireland census: aged 3 (bc1898 Dublin) and recorded as a niece to the head of house

The head, William Ormsby Weir is my 2xgt grandfather. Looking at William's brothers:
Richard: died 1873 - so he's not the father
Robert: died 1890 - so he's not the father
Arthur: born 1842 died 1932, a bachelor but would have been abt 56 at birth of Della
Launcelot: born 1838 (it is believed he died in infancy) but would have been abt 60 at birth of Della

If any of them had a relationship with Della it is more likely they were the grandfathers not father.

But with two brothers deceased before her birth, that leaves only two to consider, Arthur and Launcelot. But Arthur died a bachelor (nothing in the family history suggest a child to Arthur) and it is believed Launcelot died in infancy.

So unless I am missing some vital information, Della is not actually related to this particular Weir branch. I can't find any information on her birth. I'm not even sure of the name, Della. Is this her actual name, an abbreviated name or pet name?

By 1911 she would have been about 13 but where is she? I can't find her anywhere.
There is an Adeline Weir recorded as a visitor; aged 14; 36 Nelson St. And inlaws of William (who were living with him in 1901 - Ruxton) are living in 10 Nelson St in 1911. If this is Della, I still no absolutely nothing about her

Can anyone help me find this Della and how she fits into the family? If at all

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at the civil birth index records for all Weir births registered in Dublin for 1896-1899. The best fit for a first name was Amerlia Weir born in the 3rd quarter of 12897 which matches the age 3 in the 1901 census. You would have to contact the General Register Office to get a copy of the record and see who the parents were and verify if this record is for your Della. Let me know if you need instructions for getting a copy of a record.

  • Hi Jacqui

I'm confused! I've googled and found some of your previous posts, in which you state that Launcelot (born 1852) married Elizabeth Lennon in Dublin in 1873 (I, too, found that marriage). This Launcelot was a brother of William Ormsby Weir, but you say (above) he was born 1838?

Also in a previous post, you say that Launcelot and his wife Eliza emigrated to Australia, but in another post you know that he died in Dublin in 1880! .... hence my confusion (I must be missing something here!). You may already have seen the Wills of Launcelot Ormsby and his brother William Ormsby here http://www.willcalendars.nationalarchives.ie/search/cwa/index.jsp

You may already know that Launcelot & Eliza had a son, William George, but just in case not, here are the details. Perhaps he's the father of Della/Adeline, and should be noted as a grand-niece to William O on the 1901 census?

A post made by you which refers to Marianne McAuley - no doubt the same person who was a sponsor at William's baptism:

    Hi
Does anyone know of or have a connection to MARIANNE McAULEY who died of Consumption 26th Sept 1881 aged 31 in Dublin (Ire)and is buried in Glasnevin cemetery Dublin. At the time of her death she was living in 12 Usher's Quay Dublin. From the cemetery records it states that Marianne was Catholic, a Cloakmaker and the informant was Elizabeth Agnes Weir of Summerhill Dublin.
Marianne was buried with LAUNCELOT ORMSBY WEIR (husband of Elizabeth Agnes Weir) who died 2nd June 1880 of Lung Cancer. From the cemetery records it states that Launcelot was Catholic, a farmer and the informant was Daniel Joseph McAuley of 12 Ushers Quay Dublin

  • Hi dancer51

Confusesd? I am always in a state of confusion with family tree searching, believe me. LOL

Launcelot Ormsby Weir (b1852) did have a brother William Ormsby Weir (bc 1849) but he also had an uncle William Ormsby Weir (b1836) my 2x gt grandfather.

John McTeirnan's book 'The Weirs of Sligo' states that Launcelot emigrated to Australia with his wife (Elizabeth Agnes Lennon) and daughter (Katie) when in actual fact Launcelot died 2 June 1880 and is buried in Glasnevin cemetery. His wife and daughter emigrated to Australia Sept 1883.

Launcelot and Elizabeth did have a son William George Weir (b 7 May 1879) but he died (15 June 1879) aged abt 1mth.

    As for Della:

In the 1901 census she is recorded: aged 3; liv Rutland Sq; niece to William Weir (my 2xgt grandfather) living here too is William's wife Sarah (nee Ruxton) and her sisters Jane & Rose Ruxton

I then found an Adeline Weir:

In the 1911 census she is recorded: aged 14; visitor to 36 Nelson St

What is interesting here is that Adeline is a visitor to no 36 Nelson St and living in no 10 Nelson St are Jane & Rose Ruxton (whom Della was living with in 1901) and William (died 1910) and Sarah Weir (died 1909) were both living at 10 Neslon St at time of their deaths.

I have since found that a Della/Adeline Weir is recorded in the electoral register from 1939 to 1964 at YWCA Mountpleasant and an Adeline Weir died 1989 aged 92 and is buried in Glasnevin. This Adeline's age at death gives a birth year of approx 1897 tying in with the Della of 1901.

There seem to be too many conincidences here and I am starting to believe that, in all four cases - 1901, 1911, Electoral Register & Death - the Della/Adeline are all one in the same

But what I want to know is her parentage. I know the relationship of 'niece' is not right. I am also aware that the surname given of 'Weir' may not be right either but if that's the case she used the name Weir all her life

An initial possibility, Amelia Weir born 1897, is not Della. I found her in 1901 living 9 Northcourt Ave (Emila) and the same address in 1911 (Amielia)

    Did that help any?
