My great grandfather Joseph Donoghue was born in Kilkenny and subsequently emigrated to Rylstone in New South Wales. He married Ann or Mary Ann Walsh although I don't know if that happened in Ireland or NSW. Does anyone know of this or either of these families?

  • Dear Mairi

I had a look on Roots Ireland but couldn't see a marriage record for any John Donoghue married to a Walsh (or any variant of their surnames) in Co. Kilkenny. It may be the case that the event took place in a parish and at a time that pre-dates parish records, that is took place somewhere else in Ireland or that it happened outside of Ireland. There are two marriages between a John and Mary (not Mary Ann)  - one in Cork (1858) and one in Galway (1857). You would need to know the year at the very least and the parish/county of origin of Mary as it is likely they married in the bride's homeplace.

There are two baptism records for a John Donoghue on that website (it is a subscription site). One in Kilkenny in 1832 and other in Kilkenny in 1842 - it could be either one or none of these - we would need to know a parish/townland or father's name to try to ascertain more. On the basis that we don't know more will will probably have to undergo an information gathering exercise until such time as you can make a more informed decision or further info becomes available.

Do you think you have exhausted all options your side - death records, obits etc? as you can see from the above they are a lot of variables that cannot be overcome without some extra piece of info to cross-reference.

    Best wishes

  • Mairi:

It appears Clare looked up John instead of Joseph. Roots has an October 1836 baptismal record for a Joseph Donohoe with parents Malachy Donohoe and Anne Neill. The baptism was in the Castlecomer RC church. As Clare indicated, you need another source which shows parents names to confirm if this record is for your ancestor.
