Hello, I am searching for any information for a Joseph Tyndall born in County Kilkenny in 1839. His parents were William and Catherine (Maybe nee Shore) Tyndall. Joseph claimed a close relationship to Professor John Tyndall, who in turn claimed descent from William Tyndale, the matyr. Josephs family were farmers and Joseph left Ireland, for Australia on 07/05/1862, aged 21 years, on the ship the "City of Melbourne", from Liverpool. This was seven years after his brother Robert had migrated to Australia. Any information you can send my way regarding further information on either Joseph himeself, or his parents, William or Catherine, would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Sandy Ryan

There was a William Tyndall, Griffith Valuation, Dysart Parish, in Coan, Probably the father.

Also on the 1901 census a William, born around 1837, probably a brother to Joseph,

    And the 1911 Census.

It looks like a very good match

  • Hi Sandy,

Did you get anywhere with Joseph Tyndall?

Looks like he was my Great Grandfather but I think born in 1844 (parents are same as I think). I think he would have been John Tyndall's cousin.

He married Mary Mulcahy (born O'Brien) soon after he arrived in Australia, in Creswick (Must have been at the massve gold rush there).  I got married in the same chuch, only finding out on the day, because the priest mentioned that the records showed the first wedding was between a Tyndall and O'Brien.

From William Tyndall and Catherine Shore I have info back to Nicholas Tyndall (born 1690) and Mary ?
