This is an update to my message posted in the Ireland group, where I initially stated the following:

Thomas Hanley married Bridget White ca. 1845-46. Their first son, Patrick, was born on 17 Mar 1847 (another reference states 1846).  The family was Roman Catholic.

After Patrick was born, the family left Ireland for America.  They are not found in the "Famine Immigrants" series of books or in other U. S. passenger lists.  I believe they traveled to Canada first. They lived in Albany, New York for a short time before finally settling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in time for the 1850 U. S. Federal Census.  Thomas and Bridget had at least five more children in Milwaukee: James S., Michael John, Joanna "Julia", Mary Ann, and Margaret.

Bridget died before 1860 and Thomas may have died before 1870.  The orphaned children ended up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Update - 14 July 2014:

After researching the baptismal sponsors Thomas and Bridget selected for their children, I may have had a breakthrough.  One couple, Michael & Julia Lodge, were researched in the 1860 U. S. Federal Census for Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.  Michael Lodge stated that he was born in Kilkenny County, Ireland. Living a few doors away was Thomas Hanley, now a widower, who stated he was born in Kilkenny County, Ireland.  I believe that this could be my Thomas Hanley.

If so, it is possible that marriage records for Thomas Hanley and Bridget White, and birth/baptismal records for Patrick Hanley exist in parish records in Kilkenny County.  I don't know which parish they came from.  When I checked Griffith's Valuation, I found several Hanley, White and Lodge families throughout Kilkenny living in several different parishes.

I appreciate any help or suggestions for further research.

  • Good Afternoon

Congratulations on finding out a bit more about your ancestor, Thomas Hanley! Have you had a look at rootsireland.ie to see if you can locate any further records? It is a subscription site but quite good. Alternatively you can have a look at familysearch.org

    Best wishes

  • Thanks, Clare.  I have checked rootsireland.ie, but there are no marriage or birth records for this family on the site yet.  I periodically check the site to see if new records have been added.
