My great great grandpa Hugh Joseph Reilly was born in Longford County, on December 26, 1878.  I have his passenger list saying he was from Augenarau,, but that is probably a misspelling, because I can't find it on google.  I know his parents are Thomas Reilly and Bridget Murray, and there is one thing I can find on them:

According to this, Thomas and Bridget were living in Aghakilmore, which could be Augenarau, I just don't know how it is supposed to be pronounced.  I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions as to what it could be.

Thanks,

    Kaufpuff:

The civil parish for Aghakilmore is Columbkille. Assuming that Hugh left Ireland in the mid 1890s, I think it is likely that he was living in Aghakilmore then. For your information, Listed below are all the townlands which start with A including Aghakilmore in Columbkille civil parish.

You could also get a copy of the civil birth record (index record below) for around 4 euros from the General Register Office. If Hugh was living in Aghakilmore when born then you have your answer. let me know if you want to get a copy of the record and I will forward instructions.

Let me know if you have any questions

  • Hello Roger.

I've been helping Kaufpuff with trying to find the correct townland for his ancestor, Hugh O'Reilly/Reilly.

The same day Hugh arrived in the USA in Nov. 1894, another man, Peter O'Reilly (born about 1874) came.  They both listed the same place "Aughanarau" for Hugh, and "Aughenarau" for Peter.  I've attached the images of the 2 ship manifests, showing how they spelled it.

I believe they are brothers or cousins, since they traveled together.

I searched the County Longford 1901 census, for all the townlands to see if any might be correct, with no luck.  The only one that seemed a strong possibility (parents names match, as well as, their townland is similar) is the Thomas and Bridget that Kaufpuff found (shown in the above message.)

Is there anyway to contact someone in the Aghakilmore area, to see if they might recognize the name Aughanarau or Aughenarau.  We want to make sure we've got the right townland, but can't seem to find anything on the names that the 2 O'Reilly men used on their ship manifests.

Kaufpuff is very interested in ordering either the Civil registration from the GRO, and/or the baptism record from the local Catholic church, so if you could please show the instructions, it would be wonderful!

    Thank you,
