I am an Irish American searching for my Irish ancestors. The Skelly family is listed in the 1659 census in Rathcline, and that is my only reason for asking this question here.
I am directly seeking information on my Great Grandfather, Francis Skelly (b, 1842 d.c1900 married to Alice Maguire 1874 in Longford), and Great Grandmother Alice Maguire (b. ? d. ?).
If anyone can help me locate these Grand folks, please email me at cjskel@aol.com with your suggestions or information. I will greatly appreciate your assistance, and thank you in advance,
Tapadh leat!

Hi,
Thank you for your message.
Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864 so you should be able to find their marriage certificate in civil records. This will give you a parish. Once you have this it will be make your research easier. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records up to 1958 online at:

Have you tried looking or the family in the 1901/1911 census records? These can offer lots of useful information. You can search these here:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
Do you know Francis or Alice?s parents? names? If you do you could try looking for them in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a property valuation survey that was carried out in Ireland 1848-64. It doesn?t offer any genealogical information but can sometimes be used to tie a person to a specific place. You can search it here:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

Ireland Gen Projects: http://www.igp-web.com/longford/

I hope some of this is helpful and gets you started. Once you have a parish of origin for Francis and Alice other avenues of research may open up to you. Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.
Kind regards,
