My great grandfather was Patrick Bolger born 1852-56 - information taken from the 1871 Liverpool census states he was from County Waterford. His mother's name was Bridget and his father was Bernard Bolger his occupation is listed as a joiner. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks Kenny O'Connell

I have attached the 1871 Liverpool census.

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

I looked at the census record and believe Wexford rather than Waterford is the county shown on the 1871 census. I started looking for the baptismal record on Find My Past and saw that I had researched for Patrick before. I then went back and found your March 28th 2016 message and my response. Do you have info that discounts the 1852 baptismal record in Wexford and now you believe Waterford is the county? FYI in the mid-19th century, Bolger was a Wexord/Kilkenny surname. Very few in Waterford.

    Hi Roger,

I wouldn't be able to say for certain if that is Bernard, it looks a good match. Is there a death record for him as I'm pretty sure he died in Ireland as no death record in UK BMD exists. No family member seems to know for certain the surname of his wife.

Is there any record of my great grandfather Partick Bolger as I know he was born in Ireland and his granddaughter is still alive!!! She would be amazed if any information came back on him.

I spoke to an old family member who confirmed what you said that they were from Wexford and they used to sing a dong called the Wexford boys? I spoke to a researcher once who thought the census entry was Waterford, it was obviously wrong.

Thanks again for your help, very much appreciated, Kenny O'Connell.

I have attached marraige certificate relating to Patrick Bolger.

Here is a link to the Wexford anthem-- Boolavogue  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHNHhQ1Q_nk

Boolavogue is the location shown on the 1852 baptismal record I sent you.

Bernard Bolger likely died before 1864 when civil registration of deaths started. I could not find a record from 1864-1871.

Did Patrick ever come back to Ireland and reside?

    Hi Roger,

No Patrick left Liverpool for the USA when My grandmother was 5. The story passed down is that he begged his wife and my grandmother Bridget to come with him tothe states, but they wanted to stay here, quite sad really.

I would like your opinion on the 1881 Liverpool census I have attached. There is a Patrick, Sarah and Michael Bulger - not Bolger. The address is 29 Eldon street the next house to the one on the 1871 census. I think this is my family as my granmothers name changed to Bulger after Patrick left them. I searched records after 1881 and this family vanish from the UK, leading me to believe they went to the states.

Let me know your thoughts, Best Kenny.

Looks like the same family but was Bridget also known as Sarah?

  • Hi Roger,

I don't know if she was also known as Sarah, but a lot of the family did use their middle name in other records, so I think it is them.

That brings me to his brother Michael on the 1881 census. There is no birth record for him in the UK census. I was wondering if there is a baptismn record in Wexford for him? I asked older family members about the name Deverux and they confirmed hearing it being mention many years ago.

Thank you for the information and links, much appreciated, I will donate to the site, best Kenny.

Looks like the sponsors were Luke Daly and Anty Deveraux. Anty is usually a nickname for Anastasia. The parents were Bryan or Bernard Bolger and Bridget Deveraux. Anty Deveraux was likely a sister to Bridget.

  • I was not able to find a baptismal record for Anty.

Many times, one sponsor was a relative/family member of the groom and the other sponsor was connected to the bride. Anty was likely a sister to Bridget. No way of knowing if she married Luke.
