Sadly I know very little about my maternal great-great grandmother, beyond what I’ve found through civil records and the 1901 & 1911 census records. She gave birth to 8 children - 4 daughters and 4 sons. Three of her children emigrated to Somerville, Massachusetts in the United States. Those 3 children married in the US and had 21 children between them.  They are the only descendants of Bridget, as her children who remained in Ireland did not marry or have children.

Most of Bridget’s children died at a relatively young age, including all three who emigrated. Two of her children survived her, with the last surviving son living until 1956 in the same area in Ireland: between Ballyvorda and Loughloon in County Clare.

Bridget died in 1926.

Three generations later, the name Bridget carries on in spirit.  Throughout my upbringing, my mother frequently called my 3 sisters and I ‘Bridget’ when she couldn’t come up with our names quickly enough-probably when we were causing trouble! My grandmother did the same.  Although I never knew my real Bridget, her name carries a familiar warmth and fond memories of my own childhood antics with my sisters!
