Dorcas Cannon is my 2 x great-grandmother. She was born in Ireland c.1849. Her birthplace and her parents are unknown. On 31 May 1864 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, she married my 2 x great-grandfather, James Whitaker (b. 1841 Sowerby, Yorkshire, England). The couple had four sons born in Pennsylvania, including my great-grandfather, Charles in 1870.
At some point between 1872-1876 they came back across the Atlantic and settled in Lancashire and then Yorkshire, England. I located them on the 1870 US census in Allegheny, Pennslyvania, when Dorcas's birthplace is listed as Ireland. The 1881 England census says "ditto" to James birthplace of Yorkshire, but family tradition and other data points to this being incorrect. James died in 1886 and on the 1891 Dorcas is head of the household, when again her birthplace is given as "Ireland". Dorcas died just afterwards in July 1891.
Looking for any help in finding who her parents were; did she emigrate to USA on her own, or was she with her parents; and where was she born.
