Folklore has it that John Blake and his first wife sailed from Ireland to New York, however because of prevailing winds ended up at Gosse Island Quebec Canada .  His first wife did not survive the voyage or died shortly after arriving.  How much truth there is to this no body knows.

After John moved in with his cousin Patrick Blake family in Walpole Township Ontario Canada  he also had a cousin James Blake family on a ajoining farm Cenus of 1847 .   So his two cousins had come to Canada before my Great Great Grandfather with their families

I have no idea where he cam from in Ireland however my grandfather thought maybe County Clare   The value Obit which stated he was 77 years old in December of 1889 and his marriage on July 1 1855 in LaSalette Ontario said he was 44 so we must assume he was born between the months of July 1 and Dec 17

  • Hi Dennis:

I note that you do not know where John Blake may have come from in County Clare.  If you check out the list of surnames from the Tithe Applotment Books (taken between 1823-37), you will note that most of the Blake families in County Clare were from the West Clare area.  It might be worth llooking at the parish registers that are associated with those areas:  Kilfearagh, Kilballyowen, Kilmurry Clonderlaw, Killard and Moyarta.  The Clare Library is a good resource to use.  The link is here:
