Hoping to find assistance in finding John Rosoce Dalton's parentage and life as a child in Ireland.  His USA death certificate states father as John Dalton born in Ireland, mother unknown.  Census records consistantly show he and his parents were all born in Ireland.  The closest leads I find are connected to the records of John Dalton and Bridget Reddy but am not 100% certain he belongs to them.  I have narrowed his immigration to two possible people, one at 16 and one about 18-20 years old but cannot confirm.

Some Ancestry family trees list Edward Dalton and Isabella Foreman as parents but I have never found a single document to confirm those two people were married, or that John Roscoe was born to them.  None of John Roscoe Dalton's female offspring, or their offspring, ever carried on the name of Bridget or Isabella which I expected especially when his first born was named John Robert Dalton (historically known to us as "Grandpa Jack") and one of his daughters was named after his deceased first wife (of whom we are connected, she was Grandpa Jack's mother), and he had a son named Roscoe.  This usage of family given names then leads me to think neither Bridget or Isabella are his mother.

It seems the name John Dalton is exceptionally common but if anyone has any fact or hint to help me confirm his lineage I would be ever grateful.  Our Minnesota, USA Dalton family (the surname is still carried) would love to finally be able to make our Irish connection to a family, location, and a history.

    Thank you! Sincerely, Barbara

  • Hi Barbara,

John Roscoe is my great great grandfather. I'm also hoping to find an Irish connection.

His son Stanley Charles was my grandfather and my father was Stanley Charles, Jr. My grandparents lived on the farm in Granada MN and we went up there many times.

My father's second cousin did extensive research on the family. I've got the family Bible, original will for John Roscoe and many other documents and pictures, etc. including a letter from the rector of the church in Derriaghy stating that John Roscoe was baptized there on September 12, 1830. There is also a document online at nifhs.org that shows baptisms in that parish and lists John Roscoe's baptism and his parents as Edward Dalton and Isabella Foreman. Therefore I believe his death certificate is incorrect in saying that his father was named John.

I would love to connect with you by email or message so we can collaborate and exchange information. We're related!
