Son of Samuel and Margaret (Watson) Kennedy of Upper Quilley townland. An older sister, Martha Ann (Kennedy) Smith, and two older brothers, John and Samuel Kennedy, had already left for the United States in the 1840s. Leslie worked in coal mining in Pennsylvania and Tracy City, Tennessee. Married Sarah Elizabeth Sawyers in 1867. They were the parents of Samuel P., Thomas Charles, David Leslie, Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie," and Dewitt Marshall Kennedy.
