Margaret Bradley/Brodley/Broadley was born around 1833 in possibly Derry, Ireland.

Her parents were John Bradley (Sailor) & Anne McEwan

The family moved to Scotland and Anne and the children can be found in Campbeltown, Argyllshire on 1841 & 1851 Census.

On the 28th October 1853 Margaret, along with her sister Ann & brother Charles, sailed from Liverpool for Hobart Town onboard the ship “Sir Allan McNab” Their emigration was assisted by the Highland and Island Emigration Society. Their residence was given as Lochland Kintyre of the Estate of the Duke of Argyll. The remarks given orphans – all in service very good immigrants.  They arrived in Hobart Town on 1st February 1854.

On the 4th April 1855 Margaret married Samuel Carter, a ship’s carpenter, at the House of Revd. William Nicholson in Hobart, a presbyterian minister.

They moved to Melbourne as their 2nd child was there in 1857.

Over the course of 20 years Samuel & Margaret had 10 children; Ann Maria, William Henry, Charles Rawle, Lavinia Rawle, Margaret Jane, Bernard, Susan, Samuel, Mary Merrington & Alfred Ernest

Margaret died in South Melbourne on 12th Jul 1909, having suffered Cerebral Haemorrhage.

She is buried at Melbourne General Cemetery.
