Mary's death certificate states she was born in Kings County (Offaly) Ireland about 1805. She left Ireland as a steerage passenger on the ship "Canton" on 2 June 1841 from Cork, Ireland, and arrived in Sydney, Australia on 18 Sept 1841. She is listed as a widow and her religion is Protestant.

Mary's daughter Mary Ann Hipwell also embarked on the "Canton" in 1841 and is listed as a cabin passenger under the Bounty System. Mary's two sons Robert 15yo and George Henry 4yo; were both born in Ireland and traveled as steerage passengers.

In 1843 Mary remarried John Short at Paterson River, Gresford, NSW, Australia, she bore two more children from this union John and Myra. Mary died 3 Jan 1887 at Gresford, NSW, Australia.
