Matthew (or Mathew) Slavin 1821

Back to List

My great great great grandfather was born in Ireland in approximately 1822. He emigrated to the US in 1845 (at least that's what he wrote on census records). I believe he first lived in New York state.  He married an Irish woman, Ann (or Anna) Coffee, sometime before 1851.  They eventually settled in Illinois, where he died in 1901.

I heard a rumor at a reunion once that he was from County Meath, but I can't seem to track down the person who said it or why they thought so.

Recently I discovered a genetically related Slavin from New York state. He is maybe a third or fourth cousin according to DNA.  He says his great great grandfather Patrick Slavin was born in Ireland in 1823 and came to the US in 1849, possibly from Meath. He was married to a woman named Rosana Duff who supposedly is confirmed to have been born in Meath.
