Back to List

Nicholas Farmer Sr born ca.1778 - died poss 8 Apr 1845 Killalon, Meath, Ireland.  This is the brother of my 4x great-grandmother, Honor Farmer Battersby born ca.1780.  They are probably the children of Elizabeth Smyth m. James Farmer.

I have seen various records for Nicholas, including Oldcastle.  Nicholas was married twice, first to Margaret Moyne d.1825 and Rose Reilly d.1892.  Nicholas & Rose may have had 3 children, Nicholas Jr b.1845, Catherine b.1840, & Thomas b.1843.

I & others in my family are DNA tested.  We're looking for DNA matches to define our Irish ancestry.  Thanks.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1778 (circa)

  • If you look up Griffiths Valuation  1847 - 1864 there is a record of a Henry Farmer and Anne Farmer in the town land of Lordstown, parish of Diamor near Killallon Co Meath.

    Best of luck

  • I ran across a Find-A-Grave page which may possibly be for my Farmers, in Clonabreany Cemetery, Crossakeel, County Meath.  There are two of interest.

    The first:
    William Farmer 1764-1787 reads:
''This monument was erected by Nicholas Farmer in memory of his brother William Farmer who Depd this life Novr 21 st 1787 aged 23 yrs. Also his sister Catherine Farmer died May 1st 1789 aged 38 yrs''

The second, which cannot be a parent but perhaps a grandparent or uncle:
    Thomas Farmer 1686-1756
East face: ''THIS STONE AND BURIAL PLOT BELONGETH TO THOMAS FARMER AND HIS POSTERITY''
West Face: ''THE AFORESd THOMs FARMER DIED IN JULY 1756 AGED 70 Yrs''

The cemetery is noted as being overgrown.

My 4x great-grandmother Honor Farmer b.c. 1780 m. James Battersby (prob) 1771-1809.  I have information that Honor Farmer and Nicholas Farmer's parents were probably Elizabeth Smyth m. James Farmer.  But I also found a Nicholas Smyth m. Mary Reilly of Moynalty, Meath, IRE who have potential.  Nicholas Smyth does have a Find-A-Grave in St. Mary's Cemetery, Moynalty, Meath, IRE but there are no dates or bio.

I have tentatively entered the following children for Elizabeth Smyth m. James Farmer:
Nicholas Farmer Sr 1778- poss 1873,
Honor Farmer b.c. 1780, Clonmellon Parish
    Thomas Farmer b. 1821
    James Farmer Jr 1823- c.1845
    John Farmer b.1832
    Ann Farmer b. 1835
    Michael Farmer b.1845
All possibly Clonmellon Parish.  I do recognize these are out of my 5x great-grandmother Elizabeth Smyth's child bearing years.  There is an Elizabeth Smyth m. James Farmer listed in parish records for these children.  Could be another family; could be adoption.

Thanks for giving this information consideration.

  • Also, in Moynalty, Meath on Find-A-Grave there are a large number of Smyths between 3 different cemeteries.  I need to read the profiles to look for information.

  • Many thanks, All the places you name are local to me. I know a person with the name Farmer had land in the town land of Lordstown around 1850.The land would have been owned by the Battersby family.

  • Oy.  It lost my whole post....

Thanks for responding.  I had been told that Catharine Battersby was the daughter of James Battersby m. Honor Farmer, a 2nd marriage for James, first wife was a Lynch.  Honor Farmers parents were possibly James Farmer m. Elizabeth Smyth.  But I don't know about any of these.  Some do check out in the NLI Parish Records.  And I'm wondering if Honor Farmer and her brother Nicholas Farmer mother Elizabeth Smyth Farmer's father was Nicholas Smyth.  I'm hoping to verify whether that gravestone was from my Nicholas Farmer, or another.  I realize this is so many question.  But thanks for replying!  Cheers!
