I am looking for the parents and siblings of Patrick Gillen who may have  been born in Antrim Ireland, married Bridget Reid and migrated to Grey County, Ontario, Canada in approx 1847 with his children Mary, Daniel, James and Patrick. My great grandfather, James Gillen was baptized to Patrick and Biddy in 1841. James two brothers Daniel (b 1838) and Patrick (b 1844) were baptized in the same parish.https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633074#page/24/mode/1up I have a number of DNA matches to Glenravel and have joined the Once Upon a Time in Glenravel Facebook group and the Glenravel DNA FB group. I have also joined the Antrim Historical Society. At this time, I have not found any definite links although I have found some possibilities. Patrick (b 1844) shows sponsors are Dan Malloy and Ellen Gillen. The names Alexander Gillen and Ellen Gillen show up in the family trees of DNA matches so i have made a note of the information on two other posts on this site: James Gillen dob 21 June 1841 Cushendall, County Antrim Ireland has great information for me to learn and Alexander Gillen and Elizabeth Maccallister post is already on my radar. If there are sites you believe I can peruse please let me know. At present I subscribe to MyHeritage.

  • I have located the baptisms of Patrick and Biddy's three sons in the Roman Catholic Parish of Layde, Diocese of Down and Connor, Co Antrim. Daniel born 1838, Sponsors John and Cath McCambridge. James born 1841. Sponsors Hugh and Mary Reid. Patrick born 1844. Sponsors Dan Malloy and Ellen Gillen. I have a number of DNA matches in the neighboring parish of Glenravel and am researching the Gillen family name there as well as cross referencing the sponsors names. Ellen Gillen shows up in my Glenravel DNA matches so def believe there is a solid link to be found.

  • My GGG grandfather was Alexander Gillen/Gillan/Gillian born 1847 from Randalstown Antrim. His children were Alexander (My GG Grandfather), James, Patrick, Ellen, and Mary. They were also Roman Catholic. I also have distant Gillen cousins in Ballymena. My paper trail ends with Alexander but due to the similarities in names, religion and proximity I believe that our families are related. Most likely just beyond what would make us an autosomal DNA match.

  • Happy to hear from you. I agree we are very likely related.  I have not found a connection to an Ellen Gillen but I believe there is one.  Have you talked to Terri Gillen from Western Canada? She is a descendant of an Alexander Gillen. Terri is a DNA match to me although we have not as yet made the connection.  Would you email me at sheilasmart59@gmail.com so we can compare more notes ..Thank you so much. Looking forward to hearing from you
