Robert Jessep Donnelly was born in Armagh County on 25 May 1838.

His parents were Charles E. Donnelly and Margaret Parsons.  In 1851 he was included on the Census of the Isle of Man.  Family tradition holds that he and his brother wished to emigrate to the U.S. but hoped to avoid discrimination by emigrating from the Isle of Man. 

Robert arrived in New York City on 30 October 1859.  In 1862 he was employed as a weaver in a mill in Burrillville, RI. 

He married Jane Love Irvine on 06 Sep 1862 and they had six children: 

  • George (1863-1877),

  • Charles (1866-1916),

  • Janet (1867-1954),

  • Robert (1874-1875),

  • Arthur (1876-1965),

  • Martha (1878-a1915).
