Robert enlisted in the Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1858 at Westminster and served until 1878. He married Mary Sullivan in 1870,with whom he had 2 sons,Thomas,born in Ireland and Arthur, born in Malta. After Marys death, he married Emma Prentice in 1880 and had 5 more children, Annie, Joseph, William John, Mary and James who died at the Battle of the Somme. James and William John joined their Fathers old Regiment,formerly the 27th.Foot.
