In 1890 Sarah was born on a farm in Loughall County Armagh. In 1894 her entire family emigrated from Ireland to New York onboard the British Princess which disembarked in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. She was accompanied by her parents and siblings. They settled in the Bronx, New York.
On 20 October 1914 in Manhattan New York Sarah married James Francis McGrath. They had 4 children. 1 born in the Bronx and the other three in Brooklyn New York.
