Thomas Joseph Egerton (Eggenton) 1890

His mother was Mary Garry from Collinstown.

He lived in The Downs Mullingar in the latter end of his life.

He married a woman called Mary - maiden name unknown at this point.

He had 6 sons named William Kevin Joseph Thomas Sean and Patrick.

  • Hi Andy

Thank you so much for getting in touch!!!  I've a million questions for you :)

Myself and my dad (Joe Egerton from Mullingar, grandson of Thomas Egerton in this photo) are organising a family reunion here in Ireland for May 2019.  We are trying to trace all and any relatives of the siblings of Thomas Egerton/Eggenton.  At the moment we are trying to ascertain where all the siblings moved to, who they married, and their children/grandchildren etc.  We have Allineen (Eileen) down as possibly having married a man by the name of Carroll?  Are we right or wrong in this?

If you are on facebook or have any children/grandchildren that may be on facebook please have them look up "Egerton/Eggenton Family Renunion" as  i've put up what information and photographs I have on there.  Alternatively i can be emailed privately at egertonreunion@gmail.com.

It would be great if you could share some information and/or photos with us and possibly look in to arranging to attend our reunion next year with your family.  I know my dad will be thrilled to hear we've made contact with someone other than those we already know of!

Again, its been super to hear from you and I look foward to sharing information with you soon.

    Nadine Walsh (nee Egerton) :)

  • Can you tell me where your grandparents lived? Date of Marriage? How many children they had and names... and names of their children???  I understand thats alot of information to gather and pass on so whenever you have time, it would be greatly appreciated!  My dad seems to remember years ago (1970s) dropping a cousin of his (Ann Egerton, daughter of Joseph Egerton/Son of Thomas Egerton in the above pic) to a house in Patrick Street, Mullingar where he thinks a daughter of Allineen/Eileen lived (possibly married a Staunton man)???

  • Great information!!!  Can you give me the married names of your mother and aunt also?  And maybe the married names of Eileen's daughters (if they married?)

Kinnegad is the neighbouring town to Mullingar, it was close to where Thomas Egerton lived in the latter end of his life in The Downs, Mullingar.  Also not too far away from where your grandmother was born in Carrick, Dalystown, Mullingar.

Do you have any information on any of your grandmothers siblings?  Possible family names, where they lived etc.

I know for sure that Thomas & Eileen's brother Joseph moved to Carlow, Ireland and his family still lives there and also use the name Egerton.  We think their brother John moved to Cork but have no known connections or leads for his family.   Two of their sisters, Julia (married McDermott) and Margaret (married Leogue) their families are still based in Mullingar.  We also think another sister Agnes moved to the UK and possibly married Bohman/Bonham.  We cannot account for the other siblings Lelie (maybe Leslie), Bridget, Mary and William.  There were 12 siblings in total and I cannot account for 1 sibling at all.  All this information I got on the National Archives website

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Westmeath/Carrick/Carr…;

There's a question, did your grandmother use the name Egerton or Eggenton?  They were all born Eggenton but Thomas Egerton (my great grandfather) changed his name to Egerton c.1917 and we are not sure why.  Thomas Egerton served with the Irish Republican Army and is listed in their archives as Egerton.  His brother Joseph used the name Egerton also.

  • Was your grandfather from the UK or Ireland?  Or do you know how he and your grandmother crossed paths?

  • Thats what I think happened too, that the name just got lost in translation over the years!  Would you happen to have a photograph of your grandparents you could email me?

  • We are meeting with the Secretary of the Parish Church where they were all born on Wednesday to get access to baptisimal records, hopefully i might be able to unearth some marriage and death records also.   I'll keep you posted on what i find

Thats no problem at all about the photos, whenever you have the time to email it, you can email it to egertonreunion@gmail.com.  We hoping to gather a photo of each of the siblings (and their spouses) for the reunion and be able to piece together type of family tree on a large board

  • Hello,

    My name is Jasmin Leogue

I have been messaging with Andy/andrew on ancestry as our DNA matched us as third cousins. I don't know a whole lot about my family history but I'm beginning to look into it.

Margaret Egerton was my great grandmother (as far as I know Egerton was how it was spelled). She married James Leogue and they had either 10 or 11 children together. One of those children was my grandfather who was born in Mullingar, he later moved to the UK and worked digging tunnels on the railways. He settled in Sussex and married and had 10 children, one of those being my father. He settled and married my mother and had 5 leogue children. My oldest sister lives near Liverpool, and my other siblings live in Sussex still. I recently moved out to St.Louis, USA and i'm out here studying.

Let me know if you have any questions I might be able to help with!

  • Hi Jasmin, great to hear from you :)

My great grand father, Thomas Egerton would have been a brother of Margaret Egerton.

If you are on facebook please search Egerton/Eggenton Family Reunion, myself and my dad are hoping to hold a reunion party in Mullingar next year.  I have some info (just to hand) on Margaret Egerton, if you want to email me at egertonreunion@gmail.com I can forward them on to you.   Also, if you are on facebook, can you tag/add all your egerton relatives to the reunion page... its really gathering momentum now!

If you could also pop in an email with the names of your aunts/uncles and grandaunts/granduncles (to the best of your knowledge, i know what its like to have a big family, there are 12 in my dads family!).   My dad is in contact with Matthew Leogue (living in the original cottage in Carrick, Dalystown, Mullingar) where all of our great grandparents/grandparents were born! Imagine that... Matthew must be a grand uncle/uncle of your dads!

anywho... i'm retiring for the night... have been in front of this laptop for nearly 5 hours now chasing information, it was fruitful!

so feel free to drop me an email or post more info on there... either is good with me :)

I look forward to sharing info

    Nadine

  • Hi,

I am not connected to the family but live in the area. I thought I might send you a link to the government website, Irish Genealogy in case you haven't seen it. There are some Eggenton records that you can view (free of charge). If the link doesn't open, just go to www.irishgenealogy.ie,  click on 'Civil Records' and enter Eggenton (also Egerton) and Registration District of Mullingar.

    Best of luck,

    Mary

  • Hi Andy and Nadine,

Thanks for your replies. You're right, Nadine. It's a great source, but not complete. Also, there are time restrictions on some of the records being made public. If you need help in getting copies any of the records which have no image available online, let me know and I can point you in the right direction. You may have also tried Family Search and for the UK records, Free BMD...if not, these might be of help to you. Best of luck with the reunion.

  • I'd still be scratching my head if it wasn't for FreeBMD for my UK branch.  Must check out FamilySearch also, think i've exhausted all my searches on Irish Geneology.  I would definitely appreciate any pointers for further irish records on line... i hope to make a trip to the National Archives in the coming months, while i have most names of each family i would really like to have dates of birth, dates of death and marriage records for them all (i know its probably impossible but thats my aim LOL)

  • Hi,

I'm a 2nd cousin 1xremoved of Mary GAFFNEY (born abt 1894 Newdown, Co. Westmeath), wife of Thomas EGERTON born 1890 Carrick, Dalystown, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.

I visited Mullingar Sep 2018 & Aug 2019 in an effort to track down the family of my great grandmother, Catherine BRENNAN 1844-1908 (baptised 14 May 1844 Rochfortbridge, Co. Westmeath). I have since discovered that Catherine was the sister of Anne BRENNAN 1836-1902, grandmother of Thomas EGERTON's wife, Mary GAFFNEY.

I am interested to know whether descendants of  Mary GAFFNEY and Thomas EGERTON have DNA tested with Ancestry or a similar testing company?

    Kind regards,

    Shirley Turner

PS I have been unable to locate the "Egerton/Eggenton Family Reunion" Facebook page, please can you advise.

  • Hi, My name is Geoff Turner and I'm in Brisbane. I have been working with my cousin Shirley on the Brennan family from the Australian end. As she says, Anne Brennan was Mary Gaffney's grandmother. This funeral notice for Mary's son William (Billie) might be of interest. It has a lot of names.

Sunday Independent (Dublin), 5 April 1998:

EGERTON (Clongowney, The Downs, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath) - April 4, 1998, William (Billie), at his daughter's residence, predeceased by his wife Olive; deeply regretted by his daughters Marie, Angela, Jackie, Imelda, Olivia and Deirdre, sons Tommy, Liam, Kevin, Joe, Matty, Noel, brothers Tommy, Sean, Paddy, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.  R.I.P. Removal this (Sunday) evening from Mullingar Hospital Mortuary at 5.30 o'c to the Cathedral of Christ The King arriving 6 o'c. Funeral tomorrow (Monday) after 11 o'c. Mass to Coralstown Cemetery.

We think Olive died in Canada in 1977 but are not sure of that. It mentions his brothers Tommy, Sean and Paddy so I guess his other brothers, Kevin and Joseph, must have predeceased him.

Billie had a daughter Imelda and I saw her name in Ancestry message boards but it seems she is no longer active in there.

There were three Brennan sisters. Annie stayed in Westmeath; Catherine came to Australia; and Bridget emigrated to the US. We have been in contact with our Australian family for some time, of course, and recently made contact with our US cousins, partly through DNA matches. It is great to now have found our Egerton cousins in Ireland as well!

My email is geetee.geetee@gmail.com if you can't get through to Shirley.
