    DEATH OF CR ALEXANDER

The Upper Murray Herald of The 28th, contained the following Concerning the death of Cr Alexander of Towong Shire, son of Mrs Alexander of Yackandandah :_Mr William John Alexander, of Eskdale, died at Tallangatta on Saturday morning. The

occurrence caused a feeling of painful Surprise, beside being so sudden and Unexpected. 'Mr Alexander had been unwell for about a fortnight , his Indisposition being set down to Influenza. He took to bed at the Tallangatta Hotel, but as bronchitis Supervened, his medical attendant ( Dr Patterson) had him removed to Mrs Cross's hospital on Friday. Dur ing Friday night the patients condition grew worse, and his heart failed at about 7 a.m. on Saturday. Mr Alexander had not been himself for some months past, and his colleagues at the council table noticed that he was looking paler and thinner than usual Mr Alexander was 61 1/2 years old. He was born at Loughall, county Armagh, in the North of Ireland, and came to Victoria about 46 years ago. For Some time he was engaged in packing goods to Granite Flat, and he also followed the avocation of miner for

a time. He then travelled for a number of years, visiting in turn New South Wales, Queensland and New Zealand. About 30 years ago He settled on the Mitta Mitta, where he got together a snug property. He also owned a farm at Carrum near Melbourne. Mr Alexander served on the Mitta Mitta school Board of Advice for a term, and he was a member of the first board of directors of the Eskdale Dairy Company. In August, 1906, be entered the Towong Shire Council as a representative of the Mitta Riding, defeating the retiring member, Mr Chas. Harper, by 87 votes. At the end of his three- years' term, in August last Cr Alexander was

Re-elected unopposed. Although his best friend would not dub him brilliant, Mr Alexander had a fund of hard commonsense that made him a good representative. He viewed his position with due seriousness, and was probably supersensitive concerning what the ratepayers would think of him and his actions ; this feeling was pointedly felt and occasionally ex pressed when he was defeated in his efforts to get done some work that Had been requisitioned for by ' tbe ratepayers of the upper end ' (as he used to call them), whom he con stituted his special care. At the February meeting he appeared to be very unwell — more fit for bed than business — but he had a high sense of duty to his constituents, and did not like to absent himseif from the April meeting, and he had to attend the obsequies of his aunt, whose sudden

death upset him greatly. Cr Alexan der was on good terms with all his fellow members. He liked his little joke, and his quaintly humorous remarks frequently ' set the table in a roar.' His sudden death will be lamented by his colleagues in the Towong Shire Council. The late Mr Alexander was a widower (his wife, formerly Miss Ann Eliza Cardwell, died six years ago), and leaves a family of seven children, the youngest being 8, and the eldest 20 years of age. He also leaves four younger brothers— one being in West ralia. It was only in last Sentember

that Mr Alexander's father died. 1 The remains were conveyed to Mitta Mitta, where the interment took place ! on Sunday afternoon. The funeral was one of tbe largest seen in the Village. Tbe Presbyterian burial Service was read by the Rev. 0. Keays. |
