William Burleigh was born at Florence Court, County Fermanagh, Ireland. His father’s name was also William and his mother’s name was Jane, née Barton. His father was a cotter on the land of the Earl of Enniskillen. He married Catherine Wallace at Killesher Parish Church in 1855, a few weeks before their departure to Portland Bay, Australia
