William Flanigan 1800

Back to List

William Flanigan was born before 1800. He lived in Cortober townland with his wife, Susan Whalen (or Phelan) Flanigan or Flanagan and their sons Philip, Daniel, John, James, and possibly Edward, William and Charles.

William, the father, appears in the Tithe Applotment in 1827 with another man named James Flanigan of Cortober.

By May-June 1853, widow Susan Flanagan is listed in the Landed Estate Court Records leasing 18 acres.

In November 1853, Susan appeared in Petty Sessions Court, apparently owing £6.11.6 for failure to repay money she borrowed for flax seed. She informed the court that she planned to ‘elope’ the county. Within a few weeks, the family sailed to New York City.

They eventually settled in Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, where their sons raised large families and enjoyed the American Dream. I am the result of that success.
