Comments

  • What a pity that the Freeman's Journal didn't record the birth name, Christian name, of this lady, so that she could be recorded for her deeds, and her life story as an individual.

Not one female name is noted as having attended her funeral sevice. How strange!

An 'Unknown Woman' who must have been well respected, as well as being JUST a wife and mother. Her story should be told.

    Thanks for sharing this. Roisin.

  • Dear Roisin D:

Thank you for your comments.  We do have her first name fortunately as she is an Ancestor profile.  This is thanks to a descendant of this family who allowed me to scan a photograph of her.

You are absolutely correct with your comments about women's first names not being included in newspaper notices and even in many burial registers.  It is a pity and it is something that we should all address in our own familly histories.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Thankyou Jane.

It's very nice to know that Catherine's family member has honored her memory by acknowledging her origins and true identity.

So much of our history is lost through this old tradition of failing to give wives their original names. We are therefore left with only half the ancestor's story, which restricts the perspective, and limits our research and understanding, accordingly.

I think we are far more aware of the limitations of such practices today.   Hopefully.

    Thanks, and kind regards,

    Roisin D.

  • It's encouraging to see that the ripples of my discontent are still evident in the comments of others, which honour so manuy 'unknown' and forgotten women, who did so much to preserve the culture and to rear their children, with little individual acknowledgement, by name. I imagine lack of education, particularly for females, was partly the reason for that.

I'm curious as to whether Gaelic would have been taught to boys and also to girls to equivalent levels, before English was the required language?
