My wife and I will be in Ireland in April 2013 and are trying to find relatives of Cornelius Spade (also known as Cornelius Spaight).  My Great-Great Grandmother, Mary Ann Spaight, was born in Derryfadda, County Clare in 1841.  She was the daughter of Cornelius Spade (Spaight) and Bridget O'Meara (O'Mara).

Cornelius Spade is listed in the 1852 Griffith's Valuation in the townland of Derryfadda.  I have a death record dated 20 March 1883 at Derrtfadda, County Clare, at age 76.  His son, Dan Spaight was listed as present at death.

Daniel Spaight (DOB approximately 1853) stayed in Ireland and married Catherine Fahey on 26 February 1876 at the Roman Catholic Church in Broadford, County Clare.   Daniel Spaight died 7 July 1923 in Derryfadda, County Clare.

We would like to be able to meet Spaight relatives during our trip from April 4 to 15, 2013.

Thank you for any help!

  • Hi Mike,

I found one SPAIGHT in the Irish phone book in Limerick:

    SPAIGHT P, Shrahane, Ballysimon, LIMK

    (061) 351354

If there are more, they are not listed in the online directory.

    All the best,

  • Hi Mike:

Many thanks for your query.  I believe that the parish that the Spaights that you are looking for came from Tulla.  There were Spaights living in Derryfada which is a subtownland in Affick (Affog) in Tulla.  They lived in that area for a number of years before moving away/emigrating.  I will look up some information for you next week in the parish register and I can contact you again.

I note your comment about meeting Spaight relations in April.  I will see what information locally I can come up with here.  If you would like to contact me at tulla@irelandxo.com, please feel free to do so.

  • Hi Margaret!

I wanted to say "Thank You" for letting me know about the Spaight Family in Clonlara.  I made contact with Donie Spaight and I had a reply from him just this morning.  He sent me his mobile phone number so that I will be able to contact him during our upcoming trip to Ireland (April 4-16, 2013).  He has agreed to meet my wife and I and show us where the family home was located.  We are both very excited about this upcoming opportunity.  I have been doing my genealogy research on the Slattery family from Lisronagh, County Tipperary and Spaight family from County Clare for over 35 years.  I wanted to let you know that your work as a volunteer is very much appreciated.  Thanks again!!! --Mike Slattery, Hays, KS, USA
