I am looking for information regarding John Power, Parents Maurice Power and Jane Martin. He was born around 1819?. He married Jane(jenny) Murphy, Parents John or Thomas & Ellen Murphy. She was born around 1825?. Their native place shows Galbally Limerick from the shipping details when they left Ireland in 1855 on the ship Cressy bound for Australia. We only know that both parents were deceased, from the shipping records again. We also know that they had two daughters when they left Ellen and Jane Power

  • My pleasure Cheryl! Good to be of use.

I am unable to give info on living persons on the site but can direct you to the Irish phone book: http://www.118.ie/ (if that doesn't work it's 11850 Directory Enquiries; there are 20 Powers in Limerick but I didn't see Galbally & Aherglow mentioned.

Sorry to disappoint you but I'm in Oz too - Safety Beach north of Coffs Harbour.

Been to Ireland 4 times - ancestors are from Achill Mayo & Galway.

Here's a bit more to keep you going; the Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 5 Maurice Power records 1827-34:

    PowerMauriceBallynacloughBallynacloghLimerick1832

    PowerMauriceBalbyshinabuoyKilquaneLimerick1834

    PowerMauriceFeohanaghMahoonaghLimerick1833

    PowerMauriceGarvary and ClugginTuoghclugginLimerick1827

    PowerMauriceGany ParkTuoghclugginLimerick1827

You'll need to do some research to find whether any is in / near Galbally / Aherlow but of course he could have moved too!

No luck in the early Irish Censuses (1821, 31, 41 or 51)

Griffiths Valuation has 6 Maurice Powers in Limerick around 1850 - the record shows address.

There are also 3 Patrick Powers in Galbally 1851 (free at http://www.askaboutireland.ie/

You also might want to have a look at http://registers.nli.ie/; just enter the parish names and see if there are any there but it's tough going as it's reading copied film.

    Here's a POSSIBLE death record:

    Name:MauricePower
    Date of Death:26-Aug-1870
    Age:83
    Parish / District:GREANAddress:Garrypraski
    County:Co. LimerickStatus:Widower (Male)

    Sex:Male

    Address:As Above (Present)

No luck findin Jane / Jenny however

  • Hi Cheryl,

Looks like "Lissanarroor" is listed as Ellen's and Jane's address at birth, located close to boundary of counties Limerick and Tipperary. See links below.

  • Sorry Col taken me so long to get back to you the info from girlish was very helpful as well we think we may have found a maiden name for jane's mother ellen also looking for info on john's siblings which we had no idea about. There is also a  lot of Power prisoners which I have no idea how to interpret those lists ! Nor the land records either but still trying very frustrating indeed 1 question tho if maurice & jane died in the famlne yrs is there likely to be any records of there buriels? I have read over the years that whle communities died along the roadside how awful ! These were buried in mass graves is there any truth in this?poor old ireland & they are still struggling with their identity makes 1 very sad.

Thankyou once again Col good luck with your digging......Cheryl

  • Hi there

thank you for your reply on John Power this 1 is not my John his father was Maurice according to his death certificate here in Oz I am thinking that Maurice had a brother William and had a son John although I have no info on Maurice's family at all ie-parents/siblings also there is no William down any of my Power line here in Australia if that is a defining fact in families. I have found that all Maurice & Jane's kids were all named after his brothers & sisters-well hopefully !!!

Once I master this Irish genealogy-that is finding Maurice's family there for all I know I've claimed somebody else's Maurice it is so hard searching from here time we got on a plane me thinks.

Any little info is most appreciated & I thank u sincerely if not for this site then I would still be in the dark

Regards to you & yours Cheryl

  • Hello we are searching for our ancestors from Galbally Limerick they were John Power & Jane Power née Murphy arriving in Oz in 1856 on the ship Cressy with 2 daughters Ellen 6.& Jane 2 his father Maurice Power mother Jane Martin married 1814 in Galbally  Aherlow Jane's parents Thomas or John Martin & Ellen O'brien

We have now decided to come to their ancestral place in May  & search for more info on their history & lives before leaving Ireland.

We would like some advice as to where there would be a place that we could book into that is close by to the places where our ancestors were or maybe still there in the area i.e. their parish, family history societies anywhere that could guide us on what and how we achieve our family history stories to pass on to our families here in Oz

                                                                                                                                            Kind regards, Cheryl Trousdale

  • I checked Griffith's Valuation for Galbally and I found 3 Powers listed, all called Patrick.  The data for Galbally was collected around 1851 and published around 1852.  If you visit the National Archives of Ireland in Dublin, they have the notebooks of the people who collected the data (Known as Land Books, House Books & Field Books) which sometimes have more data from a few years earlier.

    Surname    First    Townland    Parish
    Power    Patrick    Ardrahin    Galbally
    Power    Patrick    Garrynalyna    Galbally
    Power    Patrick    Kilgreana    Galbally

You should be able to view these on http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
The Tithe Applotments (about 1831) can be found here  http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/pagestab/Limerick/Galba…
With the Applotment Books it is always better to check the manuscript as the transcript is riddled with omissions

I have images of the revision books following Griffith's for these townlands if you can identify which one is yours and it is usually possible to follow the ownership history forward in time up to about 1970.

You might find some useful suggestions about where you could stay on http://visitballyhoura.com/
Other nearby hotels in the area would be Aherlow House and Ballinacourty House, both in County Tipperary.

  • Dear Tim

Thankyou for your response regarding the Power family in Galbally Limerick as far as I have got in my tree is to Maurice Power I haven't come across a Michael at all unless he was Maurice's brother? Of which I know nothing of Maurice his parents nor his siblings.I did however pick a Maurice Power up in the 1901 census in Galbally whether this guy was his brother who knows?altho then I picked him up again in the 1911 census with his wife & sister Joanna John my 3 x gf did have a sister Joanna they were residing in Limerick there were no children of the marriage & Joanna's status was spinster.
So who knows its like the Irish side of my family have fallen off the face of the earth.
I will follow this Michael up hopefully he is 1 of ours thanks once again also for your tips on the places to stay as well
Regards to you & yours......Cheryl Trousdale
