Maurice Sheahan was born in Foynes, Limerick to Michael Sheahan and Catherine McMahon. He was christened 11 March 1848 in Shanagolden, Limerick. He had numerous brothers and sisters, Bridget (1829), Daniel (1830), Patrick (1832), Mary (1833), Margaret (1836), Philip (1837), Alice (1839), Michael (1840), Jeremiah (1842), Catherine (1845), Sarah (1846) and Peter (1846).
He emmigrated to Victoria, Australia around 1878 and settled in Melbourne, Victoria.
He married Margaret Quinlan from Knockphelah, Tipperary on 10 Feb 1891 in Clifton Hill, Victoria. They had the following children. John Joseph (1891), Maurice Justin (1893), Kathleen Mary Adelaide (1894), James Patrick (1896), Margaret Mary (1898), Nora Alice (1898) and Daniel Peter (1901).
At the time of his marriage in 1891 Maurice was listed as a produce dealer and in 1894 was licensee of the Stockade Hotel in Nicholson Street, Carlton and then licensee of the Hibernian Hotel in Little Lonsdale St from 1895-1897, after which he went back to being a grocer.
On 2 May 1901, after giving birth to Daniel the day before, Margaret develops pulmonary thrombosis following a post partum haemorrage and dies, aged 38.
Maurice continues to live at 59 Flemington Road, North Melbourne with his children until his death on 29 August 1914. Both him and Margaret are buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton,Victoria.
