Catherine Petit was born Catherine Gallagher the daughter of John Gallagher and Anne Browne in Ballintemple, County Mayo on November 13, 1879.

John Gallagher, Cloongallane, a farmer, the son of Patt Gallagher, a farmer, married on the 22-Feb-1868 Anne Brown, Lisderrane, the daughter of Domnick Brown, a farmer. The witnesses to the marriage were John Dunleavy and Sabina Dunlevy.5 Married in Swinford Church by B Durcan P.P.

The Gallaghers lived in the Roman Catholic parish of Kilconduff, but in the civil parish of Meelick. Although Meelick had its own church from 1835, it was part of the Kilconduff/Swinford parish.

After marriage, John and Anne had the following issue:

  1. Michael Gallagher, Balintample, the child of John GALLAGHER and Ann BROWNE was baptised on the 13-Dec-1868. The sponsors were John Gallagher and Bridgid Browne.

  2. Patrick Gallagher, Lisderane, the child of John GALLAGHER and Anne BROWN was born on the 13-Feb-1871.8 We have no further records of Michael or Patrick. Given that we do not have a death record of Michael, and that neither man appears on the 1901 Census of Ireland, it is likely that both emigrated.

  3. Mary Gallagher, Lisderane, the child of John GALLAGHER and Ann BROWN was baptised on the 19-Oct-1872. The sponsors were James Gallagher and Bridgid Gallagher.

  4. Catherine Gallagher, Ballintemple, the child of John GALLAGHER and Anne BROWN was born on the 13-Nov-1879.

  5. Margaret Gallagher, Lisderane, the child of John GALLAGHER and Anne BROWNE was baptised on the 17-Jul-1888. The sponsors were Thomas Dunleavy and Sibby Dunleavy.

Maggie Gallagher departed Queenstown on the 20-Mar-1908 on board the SS Celtic, arriving at New York on the 30-Mar-1908. She was travelling on to her sister Mary Gallagher, who resided at 7th Avenue, Brooklyn. Please See Extract No.5 for a copy of this manifest.
