Dublin Zoo was first opened in 1831 by the Royal Zoological Society of Ireland.

The zoo is the 3rd oldest in the world. In 1844 it received its 1st giraffe and the first pair of lions bred successfully in 1857. In 1945 during the War, the public donated food to feed the animals.
