  • Hi there, I just saw this post on Facebook and it has me wondering if Tobias' nephew James McGrath could be my great grandfather who was born in 1857 at Cashel in Tipperary, and died in Ballarat in 1949 making him 59 at Tobias's funeral. James is listed as a coffin bearer. I noticed that one of the pall bearers was called M.J. Harrington. James McGrath married Mary Harrington who had a brother Michael Joseph Harrington (1864-1928) who would have been 52 at Tobias' funeral. So I am wondering if James' father Matthew could have been Tobias's brother. James was Baptised Nov 5 1857 at Parish of Drom & Inch Diocese of Cashel. I have done my DNA and it is available to compare on GEDmatch. Karen Mahony little.glory@bigpond.com

  • I know nothing of the mid-19th century Drom population.  All I can tell you is that Tobias McGrath had siblings baptized in Drom, Mary McGrath baptized 5/2/1816, Bridget McGrath baptized 21/1/1825 and Judy McGrath baptized 17/10/1834.  I have no way to find out whether any of these emigrated to Australia, or got married in Ireland.  There were two Marys married in Drom in 1836 and 1839, and two Bridgets in 1854 and 1857,  Sisters of Tobias?.  As often, enquirer did not indicate whether they has any information in this regard.  Whether the Parish Priest of Drom, Fr Martin Murphy, (Address Drom, Templemore, Co. Tipperary) can be of any help, I do not know.

  • Thank you very much for getting back to me.
There is quite a big gap in between the siblings birth years. 1816 -1825 -1834
Would it not be a bit unusual, for there to be no more siblings in between? Perhaps there was a high infant mortality rate
I was hoping/half expecting to see the name Matthew amongst his siblings!
May I ask what records you were able to access to collect these dates?
I am not sure who the 'enquirer' is - are you referring to me?
Thank you again for taking the time to write to me, I may follow up your suggestions to contact Fr Martin Murphy

  • Thank you for your comments Willow1. Karen & I have been able to connect our ancestors, nephews of Tobias. We believe that James father Matthew is a brother to Tobias however we are not sure how to access the Drom Parish Baptismal Records prior to 1827. It would appear that there is also another brother Michael. Can you help?
