14th September 1947
Back to List

On the 14th of September 1947, Cavan beat Kerry to claim the 61st All Ireland Senior Football Championship title.

However this was an All Ireland Final day like no other. The match was not played in Croke Park, in fact, it wasn't even played on Irish soil. The final that year took place on the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhatten, New York City. This was the only All Ireland Final to be played outside of Ireland.

The change of location was for two reasons, to acknowledge the large Irish-American community in New York, and also to mark the centenary of Black '47, the worst year of the famine which saw so many Irish people migrate to New York in search of a better life.

  • Thank you Philip Donnelly my cousin for emailing this to me. We share family roots in Greaghnadarragh, Bailieborough , County Cavan.

I was only 2 years old at the time but I know there were cousins of mine that played the game and can imagine the pride they all felt in 1947.
