  • Hi Katrina,

This is what I've been able to put together so far, but you should verify the details yourself. There are very few Chatterlys in Cork for that time period, so they stand out in the records.

John Chatterly was born 1 October 1790 in Hanley, Staffordshire, England. I believe his parents were William Chatterly and Ann Jackson of Staffordshire.

I found a possible sister: Mary Chatterly 1768-1847 (Staffordshire)

She married Matthew Adams in 1791 and I found 4 children: Fanny, Matthew, Marry and John

It looks like John Chatterly was a soldier (62nd regiment) but perhaps also a land steward? I saw that written somewhere.

I see traces of him in the Roots database and in the Casey collection.

I think Johanna Sullivan's father was Francis but haven't found her mother.

John Chatterly married Johanna O'Keeffe 16 May 1815 had at least the following two children (found in Roots and in the Casey collection):

Elizabeth born in 1825 and Joseph born in 1820 (both in Mallow). Church of Ireland

I also believe there was a daughter Mary born about 1816 but I can't find the record anywhere as there are noted gaps in Mallow records.

Since Casey collection records came from parish registers when they were compiled, there may have been more than those 3 children.

There also may have been a Sarah Chatterly.

It looks like John Chatterly's widow Johanna went to England some time after his death and died in a workhouse in Fulwood, Lancashire in 1855.

    For their children's marriages:

Mary Chatterly married John O'Keeffe in 1837 in Mallow (Roman Catholic). Perhaps she converted as her father was already deceased by then? (1825)

They had the following children: Hannah, Mary, James, Catherine, Elizabeth

Joseph married two times. First marriage to Johanna Ahern 1844, I found one child Margaret Chatterly born Mallow 1845. There may have been more born in England where they moved somewhere between 1845-1852.

His wife Johanna died in 1852 in Liverpool, Lancashire. (The Margaret you mention in your original post is Joseph's daughter, not half sister.)

Joseph remarried Elizabeth Aherne. (I think the last name is a coincidence and that she wasn't related to first wife, but could be wrong).

For Joseph and Elizabeth I found 5 children: Mary, Eugene, Joseph, John, William

Elizabeth Chatterly also married two times.

1st marriage to John Shipcott of Devon, England in 1849 Waterford

    They had the following children:

William, Robert, Joseph, Elizabeth, Sarah, may, Isabelle, Hannah

I believe William was born in Ireland and the rest in England.

Elizabeth Chatterly married William Wilkinson 1888 after death of first husband.

Elizabeth died in 1905 in Preston, Lancashire.

Here's my connection to these people:

My second great grandmother was Elizabeth O'Keeffe (1848-1932) married William Adams. Her father was John O'Keeffe.

But I am trying to decide if Mary Chatterly (born in Mallow) was her mother. I have searched every database on earth to kick down one what is one of the last remaining brick walls in my family tree.

I don't see any other possible mother for her. I know Eliza was married in Pouladown near Carrignavar. I found her brother James there too and death records for the father John in 1886. James married but had no children and he died in 1888.

I did hear from a DNA match that she heard that branch of O'Keeffes is now extinct (at least under that O'Keeffe direct line), but she had no further details. I think that makes sense because the only male child of John O'Keeffe/Mary Chatterly I found was James and married Catherine Toohill and they had no offspring I could find. John O'Keeffe died in Pouladown, Carrignavar. I found him in Griffiths there as well. Since I can find no possible civil death record, I can only deduct that Mary (Chatterly) O'Keeffe died before 1864 when civil death records began. I looked in the Dunbulloge Cemetery records but they only survived from 1896-1988. I know Eliza O'Keeffe Adams and several of her children are buried there. I think when I am in Cork next month I will go poke round that cemetery and see if I find anyone else.

I'm also wondering if there a connection between the Adams and Chatterly families? Did John Chatterly's daughter Mary marry John O'Keeffe and was Eliza O'Keeffe Adams one of the children of this union?

Best of luck with your research.

    Kind regards,

    Kerri O'Keeffe

  • Hello Kerri

Thank you for sharing. I am a descendant of Eliza and John Shipcott line, so I can't offer anything new to those brick walls of yours.

You say that John Chatterly married Eliza O'Keeffe not Johanna Sullivan. I expect that you mean't to put Johanna.

The names of the children that their daughter Elizabeth and her husband John Shipcott had, I have as; William only one born in Ireland, Robert, Joseph, Elizabeth, May J, Sarah, Isabella, Maria and Hannah.

    Good luck with your hunting.

  • Yes, sorry. I meant John Chatterly married Johanna Sullivan.

Have you tried going the DNA route? I did so, but on this particular branch I've found nobody who has any more info than what I already put together.

Oh well, it's a slow process!
