I am an Australian with Irish ancestors who will be visiting Ireland in May this year.

My great grandmother was Catherine Murphy (bap Jan 1852, Oldcastletown).  She and a brother, Michael Murphy, emigrated to Australia in 1876.  Her parents were Daniel Murphy (bap Jan 1826, Oldcastletown) and Eliza(beth) Duane (bap June 1826 Ballyvisteen).  They were married in 1851 in Kildorrery.  According to the 1901 and 1911 Ireland census Eliza(beth) Duane/Murphy was a widow and retired farmer.  She, together with members of her family, lived in Oldcastletown in house 26. In 1911 she was living in house 14 Oldcastletown.

Is anybody able to assist me with the following?

Do any descendents of the Murphys or Duanes still live in the area?

Does anybody know exactly if house 26 and house 14, Oldcastletown exist today and if so exactly where they are?

Many thanks if you are able to assist.

Jenny

Hi Jenny welcome to the Kildorrery Reaching Out Group

We have looked up your Murphy ancestors and we are pretty sure we have found where they lived in Oldcastletown,

No Murphy's there now and a new house has replaced the old one.   There are some descendants living in the Killavullen

Parish 8 miles from Kildorrery if we find more info. will let you know.   Best wishes with your research Lena

I was so thrilled to receive your response.  I am also pleased to learn that there are some Murphy descendents living in Killavullen.  If they are wiling I would very much like to meet them during my visit.

Also if they are interested in family history I would be very happy to share my records with them.  My research shows that Catherine Murphy bap 1852, who was the eldest of the Murphy children arrived in Australia in 1876, married in 1880 and died in 1902.  Sadly she predeceased her mother.  Another brother Michael Murphy b 1856 also emigrated to Australia married in Queensland and died in 1949 age 94.  He must have inherited his mother's longevity genes.

    Many thanks

    Jenny

I will be in Cork, Ireland Wednesday 18 May and departing Friday 27 May.

Would it be possible to meet someone in Kildorrery who can show me where my great grandmother Catherine Murphy and great grandparents Eliza Duane and Daniel Murphy lived and are perhaps buried?  I will be travelling by bus from Cork to Kildorrery and if this is possible will fit in with any suitable arangements.

    Kind Regards

  • Hi Jenny

I have tried to reply before but I do not know what happened to my post. My great grandfather John Noonan left Kildorrery some time after his birth in !842. He settled in Dundee, Scotland where he married and brought up a family - my grannie Elizabeth Noonan being one. However, there may be a link with your researches from what you have been saying. This John Noonan's mother was Johanna Duane whose mother was Ellen Maddin, and whose father was Timothy Duane. Now Johanna had a sister Elizabeth who from my researches was baptised on the 28th february 1829 in Cornahinch, Doneraile (not far from Kildorrery). Now this Elizabeth I have marrying Daniel Murphy in Kildorrery on the 4th March 1851. Perhaps my research is flawed as I was concentrating on Johanna Duane - my great-great grannie. I do not know. It is confusing this business. So many have the same Christian as well as Family names in the area.

    Michael A. Nolan, SCOTLAND.

I am a 66 year old Scot who has Irish antecedents on both my father's side of my family and my mother's side of my family. The Nolans came from Longford, County Longford and the Noonans from Kildorrery, County Cork.

    Michael

Nice to hear from you.  I have to say for some reason replying to you is proving a challenge.  I have an Irish great grandmother.  Her name was Catherine Murphy.  On her marriage certificate she indicates that she was born in Oldcastletown and that her parents were Daniel Murphy and Eliza(beth) Duane.

Catherine Murphy had a brother Michael Murphy who also travelled to Australia.  The record shows that his parents were Daniel Murphy and Elizabeth Duane.

I am travelling in Wales at the moment so I do not have my family history research with me.  I am happy to share more information with you though as I find researching family history in Ireland a challenge.

  • Yes Jenny, I know the problems with travelling and record keeping. Yesterday morning I was in Paris.  Now I am in Scotland. Friday, France again. I usual research the Family Tree in the winter months. My notes etc. are all over the place at times - this being one such occasion. I carry the bare bones of the tree online. I can consult that anywhere, but the details???? Now is such a moment. I have so much to do before going back to France. I hope to visit Kildorrery later this year. But to my research. I must stress my line is not quite marching yours but the Duane family name is / was pretty ubiquitous in the area. In my case the Christian name Johanna was certainly common. The same name continued down the generations here in Scotland. It may well be the same with this Mary Duane. Maybe I have the wrong Mary marrying this Daniel Murphy. I do know her father and mother were the same parents as Johanna my ancestor but is she the same Mary as yours?? It is all so confusing! I do know that I am will to keep an open mind on my research results should I go to Ireland where I may find things don't match. I hope you are enjoying your visit to Europe. Some of my relatives (more recent and not related to either the Duanes or Noonans of Kildorrery) have settled in Toowoomba near Brisbane. Family trees reach everywhere in our small world.
