Migrated to/Born in USA

Elizabeth Theresa Sullivan, daughter of Timothy Sullivan and Ellen/Helen Hartnett Sullivan, was born in Kilworth, County Cork in 1857 or 1858. She immigrated to western Massachusetts with her parents and five sisters in the mid 1860s. In the 1870 Federal Census the Sullivan family was living in Great Barrington and 13yo Lizzie was working in a woolen mill.

Elizabeth married Frank Alfred Blow, a blacksmith, in 1879. Frank's father, Pierre Peter Blow (Bleau), had immigrated from Quebec and married Mary Moran, an Irish lass from Kiltoom, County Roscommon. Frank and Lizzie built up a blacksmithing business in Lee, Massachusetts and  had seven children: Elizabeth (Bessie), Frank, Charlie, Ted, Mary Agnes, Lillian, and Mildred.

In 1901 Frank Sr. died at age 48 of pneumonia. Lizzie was still raising the children so she kept the business running with the boys pitching in. By 1910 the boys were working other jobs and the family had moved to Pittsfield. Lizzie lived the remainder of her life at 96 Elm Street with her son Frank and daughter Agnes. She died in 1934 at age 77.

  • This is so interesting! Thank you. Have you looked at Griffith's Valuation to locate the house and land that Timothy Sullivan occupied in Kilworth, County Cork? It looks beautiful, right next to the woods and present walking trail.

  • Hi Lee,

I have not looked at that record. It is my intention to visit Kilworth and a couple of other places in Ireland where I had ancestors on my next visit in a couple of years. The Sullivans had a son, John, who I have not been able to trace. Not sure if he died young or emigrated ahead of his parents. There are DNA connections to other Sullivan branches that I have yet to sort out.

    Regards, Judy
