James Orr was born about 1802 in Gartnaneane, Bailieborough, Co. Cavan.

James Orr was a member of Ulster Scots Prebyterian family. He marrid Jane Davidson (1809-1891) in about 1830. James and Jane had 10 children, eight who lived to adulthood (two sons and 6 daughters). His oldest child James Orr, Junior (1830-1888) left Ireland with his family for the USA in about 1866, living first in Illinois and then in Iowa. Vern Orr, Junior, a descendant of James Orr, JR, was Secretray of the USA Air Force in Ronald Reagan's admistration.

James Orr's other son Alexander Orr  (1847-1933) stayed at Orr homstead in Gartnaneane. A descendant of Alexander Orr is a Unionist politican in Northern Ireland and now sits in the House of Lords in the UK.

When James Orr and his wife Jane Davidson died they were buried in the churchyard in Glasleck Presbyterian Chucrch in Shercock, Co. Cavan.

Their son Alexander had a family monumnet erected at the burial site that also notes Alexander, Alexander's wife, and some of their childern
