James Tobin was born to John Tobin and Margaret Richason on or about 15 Mar 1824, and was baptized In the Catholic Church of Clogheen, Co. Tipperary. His baptismal sponsors were Patrick Tobin and Eliza Mahoney.
James Tobin and Margaret Ahern were born, likely, in Doon, District of Shanrahan, in the Union of Clogheen .
James and Margaret were married at the Ballylooby Parish on 19 February, 1844. Patrick Sullivan and Mary Going were their witnesses and the officiant was Father Michael Power.
According to Griffith’s Valuations Record of 1855, James is the tenant on plot 49 at the above location. The property owner was “Earl of Mountcashel.” Interestingly, the tenant for the adjacent plot number 50 was Michael Ahern, possibly Margaret’s father or brother.
We know of six children to spring from their union: John, (Baptized on 22 Nov 1844 although he apparently died before 1848) Mary, (Baptized 27 Nov 1845), John (Baptized 20 July1848), Johanna (born approx 1850), Margaret (Baptized 6 June, 1851) and Brigid (Baptized 6 Nov 1853) All were baptized in the Clogheen Parish Church.
Daughters Johanna and Margaret would emigrate to the United States in 1872 and 1871 respectively. There they would marry and raise families, maintaining a close connection to each other throughout their lives.
The dates of James and Margaret’s deaths is unknown, though, likely the remained on the farm until their deaths. It is presumed that they passed before the Census of 1901, as there is no record of them in the area at that time.

James and Margaret were married in 1844 and their first son was John b. Nov 1844. Given Irish naming traditions the first son was named after the father’s father. I think this is James’s 28 Mar 1824 Baptism in Clogheen Parish with John Tobin as father and Margaret Richardson the mother.

Thank you so much for the information that you provided. I have updated my records and narrative accordingly. It appears that the John Tobin born in November 1844 must have died in infancy, as a second John was baptized in July, 1848.
Out of curiosity, what prompted you to delve into my Tobin Ancestors? Are you related, or an interested volunteer with Ireland XO? Do you live in the area?
