John was born in Glanworth to Owen Geary and Julia Keeffe, one of 6 children. Married 1st Wife Mary Bernard on 8 November 1864 at Glanworth. She died in1865 place unknown. They had no children. John was a sea captain in the South China seas, sailing from Singapore to various ports from 1865- 1902. Occasionally returning to Ireland.
His 2nd wife was Mary Ellen Roche who he married in Cork city on the 6 October 1870, they had 5 children. Mary died in Singapore in 1883. The same year John was awarded 1st Class Licensed Pilot for New Harbour in Singapore. On the 9 August 1884 he married his 3rd wife Margaret Mary Davidson in Singapore, they had 7 children. Margaret died on the 21 January 1897 in Singapore. In 1893 John became President of the Masters and Mates Association for Singapore.
